A Note From the Principal

Dear Gust Community,

As we begin the 2017-2018 school year, I want to welcome all new and returning families to our Gust Community! We are home of the proud Gust Tigers!

Gust is a wonderful school with a great culture of learning and a commitment to supporting the whole child; focusing on character and academic growth. Gust is staffed with highly effective teachers that joyfully work with our eager and talented students and our actively engaged parents/families.

My journey to Principal of Gust began as a young student of the Denver Public Schools and a proud graduate of George Washington High School. I completed my multiple degrees from the University of Northern Colorado and began my teaching career in DPS. I have taught at both the elementary and middle school levels which has afforded me varied experiences that have helped shape my beliefs about education. As I begin my 32nd year in DPS, I can say that I am a leader who deeply values relationships and collaboration and that school should be a place of joy, personalization, and rigor. We are charged with preparing our students for the future and the dreams they wish to pursue.

I am a native of Denver and a proud mother of two. My husband, children, and I enjoy our beautiful Colorado state by spending time in the mountains going hiking and snowshoeing. When we have the opportunity, my family also enjoys traveling and always looks forward to experiencing different areas of the country and world.

This year there will be new ways in which families may become involved at Gust and I look forward to spending time with all of the Gust families. Please watch for flyers with upcoming parent engagement opportunities!

With Best Regards,

Joanne P. Lander

A Note from the Principal

Greetings Gust Community!  I want to begin by congratulating the 2017 Mile High Scholars:

Sinai Gonzalez, 5th Grade

Emerson Villeda-Galeano, 5th Grade

The award is given to students who exemplify leadership, respect and peer support.  “This program instills a sense of pride in the students’ achievements and their contributions to their school community,” Mayor Hancock said. “The students who are recognized as Mile High Scholars demonstrate the leadership skills and compassion required to compete and succeed.  This generation will ensure the long-term vitality of our great city. We are honored to recognize them for their accomplishments.” These students have received certificate packages that include a congratulatory letter from the Mayor, a Mile High Scholar Certificate, a bumper sticker, and several tickets to various cultural organizations and sporting teams!

Additionally, we want to thank our parents and students for their incredible work to be in attendance for and finish our end of year testing.  These tests are critical to helping teachers know what gaps exist and how to build off of existing knowledge.

Our Gust Community Partnership group held their first annual Father-Daughter Dance last month which was a great success! 200 attendees enjoyed a DJ, photo booth, sweet treat buffet, ice cream and more. Each daughter received a tissue paper corsage when entering and were able to dance the night away with their special guy. Our next parent sponsored event is Mother-Son Bowling on May 12. Please watch for the notices sent home regarding the upcoming event details.

May 19 will bring the annual Gust Field Day. Grades 3, 4 and 5 will compete from 9:00-11:30.  Grades Kindergarten, 1, and 2 will participate in field day events from 1:00-3:15 with their peers, staff, and parents cheering them on! Join us to cheer on each of our  themed classroom teams!

On May 26 from 9:15-11:00, students will present their inquiry-based projects to peers, staff, and community at the Gust Science Fair.

On May 31 our Kindergarten students will have their continuation ceremony.  Ms. Allen’s and Ms. Wyman’s classes will start at 10:00 a.m.  Ms. Gomez’s and Ms. Liakos’ classes will begin at 1:30 P.M.

On June 1, we will celebrate our departing 5th Grade.  The 5th Grade Ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. for Ms. Ellis/Walters, Mr. Rocco, and Mr. Roman’s classes.  The ceremony for Mr. McManus and Mr. Kolsky’s classes will begin at 1:00 p.m.

The last day for students is June 2, 2017. The last day is a half-day and students will be dismissed at 12:30. Please make arrangements to pick-up students at 12:30.

For continuing families, the Gust Registration will be held as an Open House on August 2 and August 3.  On August 2 from 8:00 – 3:00 p.m. and August 3 from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m.  Please plan on attending one of the registration sessions in order to receive important information and to secure your student’s assignment at Gust.  The first day for students will be on August 21, 2017.  All students previously registered will be assigned a homeroom and have a teacher looking for their smiling face on the first day, so make sure to come in and get all of the paperwork completed prior to the official first day of school!  With that, I leave you all with best wishes for a safe and fun-filled summer, and look forward to greeting all of you again in August!

Sincerely,

Joanne Lander
