Gifted and Talented

Hello, I’m Barbara Laff, the Gifted/Talented Coordinator at Gust. This is my eighth year at Gust, and I am so happy to be here! Using state and district assessments, together with parent and teacher recommendations, I identify students who are gifted in many different ways. I then support their learning throughout their school experience here at Gust, by creating Advanced Learning Plans with their classroom teachers. I help enrich the curriculum for students in the HGT (Highly Gifted and Talented) classrooms, by providing higher-level math and reading groups, and providing integrated lessons and projects over several weeks about holidays, geography, science, and museum exhibits. The activities I sponsor are open to all students (generally grades 3-5), and include the Spelling Team, Destination Imagination, Shakespeare Festival, and Science Fair. You can find me backstage, and can reach me at 720-982-3818, or

Spelling Bee    Students should watch for the spelling bee qualifying test, which will be given in classes soon.  If you don’t get a test, please see Mrs. Laff to take the test.  The top spellers will compete for a place on the Gust Tiger Spelling Team shortly after that.  Go Gust Tiger Spellers!

Destination Imagination – Can you build a boat out of popsicle sticks and pipe cleaners that actually floats?  Can you build a tower made of toothpicks and tape that can support a one-pound weight?  Could you do all this while singing an original song you and your friends wrote?  If this sounds interesting, Destination Imagination is for you.  The Gust team for this wild, wacky competition that helps you build your creativity and teamwork skills is forming now.  The team meets on Thursday after school in the auditorium.  If you are interested in joining the team, please contact Mrs. Laff at school. WE NEED PARENT VOLUNTEERS!!  We start November 2!!
